Presort Eligibility Information
Presort Media Mail Eligibility Overview

Mailings of 300 or more addressed pieces are eligible for 5-digit and Basic sort rates. Generally used for books (at least eight pages), film (16 mm or narrower), printed music, printed test materials, video and sound recordings, play scripts, printed educational charts, loose-leaf pages and binders consisting of medical information, and computer-readable media. Media Mail includes specific types of Package Services matter that meets additional eligibility standards for single-piece and presorted rates. Advertising restrictions apply.

Rates and Fees

Single-piece rates are based on weight only. Presorted rates: 5-digit and Basic rates are based on weight and level of presort. Our software figures out the rating and sorting so you don't have to. All that is required is for you to sort the pieces to the correct sack specified on the Mail piece after processing.

Presort Discount

  • Basic sort discount $0.39.
  • Barcode discount $0.03.
  • Minimum Pieces required per mailing 300.

Barcoded discount

  • Available for machinable parcels that bear a correct barcode and are part of a mailing of at least 50 pieces.
Total Savings per piece with Presort Media Mail $0.42 (Basic sort).



Bound Printer Matter Eligibility Overview

Mailings of 300 or more addressed pieces are eligible for presort rates. Pieces must weigh no more than 15 pounds. Pieces might be subject to other minimum weights or dimensions based on the standards for specific prices and consist of advertising, promotional, directory, or editorial material (or any combination of such material). They must be securely bound by permanent fastenings such as staples, spiral binding, glue, or stitching. Loose-leaf binders and similar fastenings are not considered permanent. Consist of sheets of which at least 90% are imprinted by any process other than handwriting or typewriting with words, letters, characters, figures, or images (or any combination of them). Advertising restrictions apply.

Rates and Fees

Bound Printed Matter (BPM) prices are based on the weight of a single addressed piece or 1 pound, whichever is higher, and the zone to which the piece is addressed. The Presorted Bound Printed Matter price has a per piece charge and a per pound charge. Postage is based on the price that applies to the weight (postage) increment of each addressed piece and on the zone to which the piece is addressed. The minimum postage price for an addressed piece is one unit of the per piece charge plus the per pound charge for an addressed piece weighing 1 pound. Our software figures out the rating and sorting so you don't have to. All that is required is for you to sort the pieces to the correct sack specified on the Mail piece after processing.

  1. Multiply the number of pounds in the mailing by price per pound. (by zone)
  2. Multiply the number of pieces in the mailing by price per piece.

Barcoded discount

  • Machinable presorted parcels may be eligible for barcode discount of $0.03 per parcel (50-piece minimum)
  • Except for parcels mailed at presorted DDU or DSCF prices.
*The USPS does not guarantee the delivery of BPM within a specified time. BPM might receive deferred service. The local post office can provide more information concerning delivery times within its area.

Standard Mail Eligibility Overview

Standard Mail provides economical prices for mailings of 200 or more pieces or 50 or more pounds of mail. Standard Mail consists of mailable matter that is neither mailed or required to be mailed as First-Class Mail nor entered as Periodicals (unless permitted or required by standard) and that weighs less than 16 ounces.

Rates and Fees

Pieces that exceed 3.3 ounces (0.2063 pound) and less than 16 ounces ( 1 pound) are subject to a two-part piece/pound price that includes a fixed charge per piece and a variable pound charge based on weight. Our software figures out the rating and sorting so you don't have to. All that is required is for you to sort the pieces to the correct sack specified on the Mail piece after processing.

Determine single-piece weight in a mailing of nonidentical-weight pieces
  • Weigh each piece individually
  • Express all single-piece weights in decimal pounds
  • Rounded off to four decimal places
  • Standard Mail pieces must weigh less than 16 ounces.
Barcoded Surcharge
  • For nonbarcoded parcels, add $0.07 per piece.
  • The surcharge does not apply to pieces sorted to 5-digit ZIP Codes.
*Standard Mail may receive deferred handling. Service objectives for delivery are 2 to 9 days; however, delivery time is not guaranteed.
